Short description
A coastal town in northern California is preparing to mark the centenary of its founding when a thick, unnatural fog rolls in from the sea. The fog brings deaths with it, and the town's residents come to suspect that it is tied to a ship that was deliberately lured onto the rocks a hundred years earlier. The vessel was carrying a group of lepers, and everyone aboard drowned. Now the long-dead mariners are said to have returned to take revenge on the descendants of those who caused the wreck. Among those drawn into the mystery are Nick Castle, Elizabeth Williams, the radio host Stevie Wayne, and Father Robert Malone, whose family history is bound up with the town's past.
Rupert Wainwright directed the film, his third feature after Blank Check (1994) and Stigmata (1999). Cooper Layne wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Debra Hill, John Carpenter and Randi Chernov. Tom Welling, Maggie Grace and Selma Blair lead a credited cast of 31, with DeRay Davis, Kenneth Welsh and Adrian Hough also appearing.
Made for a budget of 18 million USD, the film took about 46 million USD worldwide. It sits well below the audience scores of the original story it revisits: on IMDb it holds 3.7/10 from 41,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.7/10 from 869 votes. A film critics' rating of 3/10 from 68 reviews places it below both audience measures.
