War of the Arrows is set in Korea in 1636, during the Manchu invasion. Nam-yi, a skilled archer and hunter, and his sister Ja-in were raised by their father's closest friend after their father died. When invaders attack their village and take Ja-in prisoner shortly before her wedding, Nam-yi sets out to find her, armed with the bow he inherited from his father. His pursuit brings him into conflict with the Manchu forces, who come to see the elusive archer as a threat worth hunting down.
The film was directed by Kim Han-min, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was the first of his features in chronological order, ahead of The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Hansan: Rising Dragon and Noryang: Deadly Sea. Park Hae-il plays Nam-yi, with Moon Chae-won as Ja-in, Kim Moo-yul, Ryu Seung-ryong, Park Ki-woong and Ryohei Otani among the credited cast of 27.
Produced by Jang Won-seok and Kim Sung-hwan for Lotte Entertainment and partners, it cost about 8 million USD and returned roughly 53 million USD worldwide, a strong multiple on its budget. Audiences rate it 7.1/10 on IMDb from 13,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from 298 votes, while critics give it 8/10 from five reviews, placing the critical score above both audience scores.
