The Wolfman

Lawrence Talbot left his home village of Blackmoor as a child, after his mother's death, and spent years abroad trying to put the past behind him. When his brother goes missing, Gwen Conliffe, the brother's fiancée, persuades him to return and help in the search. Back at the family estate he is drawn into a conflict with his father, Sir John, while the countryside is shaken by a series of brutal killings. Scotland Yard sends Inspector Francis Abberline to investigate, and the villagers come to believe that something beyond ordinary explanation is hunting them. Talbot's own encounter with that force leaves him carrying a curse. The film is a werewolf story set in Victorian Britain, inspired by the classic Universal monster tradition.

Joe Johnston directed, working from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self, with Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving in the lead roles; del Toro also produced. The film came eighth in Johnston's directing career, between Hidalgo and Captain America: The First Avenger. Its reported budget of about 150 million dollars was large, and its worldwide return of roughly 141 million dollars fell short of that figure. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from about 117,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 out of 10 from some 2,250 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.1 out of 10 from 220 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did.
