Mel Gibson plays Driver, a career criminal who crosses into Mexico after a botched robbery and a high-speed chase ends with his car wrecked at the border. Mexican authorities arrest him and send him to a prison that operates less like a lockup than a walled town run by inmates, where weapons and drugs circulate freely and newcomers are viewed as potential resources. Driver struggles to adapt until a young boy living inside the prison helps him find his footing, and he eventually takes on the task of protecting the child.
