Persuasion

Anne Elliot lives with her status-conscious family, whose wealth is slipping away. Years earlier, she was persuaded to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a naval officer without fortune or connections. When he reappears in her life, Anne must decide whether to leave the past behind or act on the feelings she still has for him. The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, the story of a woman given a second chance at love.

Carrie Cracknell directed, working from a screenplay by Ronald Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. It was her second feature, following Nora, and preceded a 2024 filmed stage production of The Grapes of Wrath. Dakota Johnson plays Anne, with Cosmo Jarvis as Wentworth, Henry Golding as William Elliot, Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell and Ben Bailey Smith as Charles Musgrove, among a credited cast of 24. The film runs 108 minutes and was released on 1 July 2022.

Reception was mixed. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 40,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 680 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5 out of 10 from 139 reviews. Audience scores are therefore close to the critical one, with the larger IMDb sample landing slightly lower.
