Short description

Rosaline is a comedic retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet from the perspective of Juliet's cousin Rosaline, who was Romeo's girlfriend before he met Juliet. Heartbroken when Romeo turns his attention to her cousin, Rosaline sets out to sabotage the famous romance and win him back. The story unfolds in Verona, where Rosaline, a Capulet, has been carrying on a secret relationship with Romeo of the rival Montague family, while her father pressures her to marry. The film is based on Rebecca Serle's novel When You Were Mine.

Karen Maine directed the film, following her two earlier features Yes, God, Yes, and the screenplay was written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Kaitlyn Dever plays Rosaline, with Isabela Merced as Juliet, Kyle Allen as Romeo, Sean Teale as Dario, Christopher McDonald as Lord Capulet, and Minnie Driver as Nurse Janet. The production was handled by 21 Laps Entertainment and 20th Century Studios, with Shawn Levy among the producers.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.5 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from a much smaller pool of voters. A critics' rating of 6.6 from 83 reviews places the film close to both audience scores, suggesting a generally mild positive reception across critics and viewers alike.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In William Shakespeare's original play 'As You Like It,' Rosalind never appears before the audience. She leaves Romeo even before the events depicted in the play.
  • Work on the project began in 2010. In August 2011, negotiations were underway with Keira Knightley for the leading role. In October of the same year, Haley Steinfeld and Deborah Ann Woll were considered for the roles of Juliet and Rosalind, respectively, and Dave Franco was considered for the role of Romeo.
