Short description
Set in Los Angeles in 1949, Gangster Squad centres on Mickey Cohen, a Brooklyn-born mob boss who controls much of the city's illegal trade in drugs, weapons and prostitution, and who wants a share of every bet placed west of Chicago. His influence extends beyond his own enforcers to police officers and politicians in his pay, which makes him difficult to touch. A small, unofficial group within the LAPD, led by Sergeant John O'Mara and Sergeant Jerry Wooters, sets out to dismantle his operation.
Ruben Fleischer directed the film, his third feature after Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less. Will Beall wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Michael Tadross, Kevin McCormick and Dan Lin. Josh Brolin plays O'Mara and Ryan Gosling plays Wooters, with Sean Penn as Cohen, Nick Nolte as Bill Parker, Emma Stone as Grace Faraday and Anthony Mackie as Coleman Harris.
Released in January 2013, the film had a budget of 60 million dollars and took about 105 million dollars worldwide. Audiences are mixed on it: it holds a rating of 6.7 on IMDb from roughly 228,000 votes and 6.4 on TMDB from a few thousand votes. A film critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 205 reviews sits below both audience scores. The production credits list 196 cast members and 167 crew.

- When two men are playing Chinese chess in Chinatown, it's noticeable that the arrangement of the pieces on the board does not correspond to the rules of the game.
- Ryan Gosling's character jokes in one scene that the only famous Mickey he's heard of is Mickey Mouse. As a child, Ryan Gosling appeared in the series "Mickey Mouse Club" (1989-1994).
- Amy Adams and Kate Winslet were considered for the role of Connie O'Mara.
- Jamie Foxx was considered for the role of Coleman Harris.
- Bryan Cranston auditioned for the role of Max Kennard, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts with the film "Argo" (2012).

- The initial trailers for the film featured a mafia shootout in a cinema, but following the tragedy at the premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises", the film's release was postponed from September 2012 to January 2013, the scene was cut, and the rest was re-edited.
