Short description

After more than thirty years of marriage, Kay and Arnold have settled into a routine that has left little room for closeness. Kay still wants intimacy and decides to act on it after learning about a well-known couples therapist, Dr. Bernie Feld, who practices in the coastal town of Hope Springs. Arnold, a reserved man set in his habits, is unenthusiastic about the idea, but he agrees to travel with her. The two book an intensive week of counselling with Dr. Feld, whose unconventional methods push them to confront how far apart they have drifted and to decide what their marriage should become.

David Frankel directed the film from a screenplay by Vanessa Taylor. It followed his earlier work on The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me and The Big Year, and preceded One Chance. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones play Kay and Arnold, with Steve Carell as Dr. Bernie Feld; Jean Smart, Marin Ireland and Ben Rappaport appear in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 30 million dollars and took about 114 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb the film holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 46,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.3 from around 847 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 172 reviews places it slightly above those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Jeff Bridges was offered the lead male role, but he declined.
  • Several times, Kay is shown making breakfast for Arnold. She fries one strip of bacon and cracks one egg into the pan, but two eggs can be seen on Arnold's plate.
  • When a distraught Kay is walking in the rain, her hair is wet and disheveled. When she enters the bar, she quickly runs her hand through it, and by the time she sits down (a few seconds pass), her hair is already dry and neatly styled.
  • In almost every street scene near Kay and Arnold's house, a Buick and a Subaru can be seen parked in the driveway in front of the garage. However, when a taxi arrives to take Kay to the airport and bring her and Arnold back, the cars are gone. Presumably, they moved the cars into the garage as they were about to leave town. When Kay is about to leave, neither she nor Arnold, who was going to accompany her, knows this.
