Short description
After his father dies in a car crash, teenager Kale grows withdrawn and gets into trouble at school. A judge sentences him to three months of house arrest, enforced by an ankle bracelet that alerts the police if he wanders more than about a hundred feet from home. With his mother working long hours to keep the household afloat, Kale is left alone in the house, passing the time with video games, television and the internet.
Boredom turns him into a watcher of his suburban street. He takes an interest in Ashley, a girl his age who has just moved in next door, and in his neighbour Mr. Turner, whose behaviour strikes him as strange. Together with Ashley and his friend Ronnie, Kale begins monitoring Turner more closely and becomes convinced the man is hiding something serious.
D. J. Caruso directed this 2007 DreamWorks thriller, the fourth of the films he directed, following Two for the Money and preceding Eagle Eye. The screenplay is by Christopher Landon and Carl Ellsworth. Shia LaBeouf plays Kale, with Sarah Roemer, Carrie-Anne Moss, David Morse and Aaron Yoo in the main roles. Made for around 20 million dollars, it took in roughly 118 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from about 274,000 votes, on TMDB 6.7 from over 4,000, while the critics' rating stands at 6.5 from 175 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The title was translated into Russian as “Paranoia.” In reality, the title is a neologism – a blend of “Disturb” and “suburbia.”
- The script was written in 1990, but was shelved. Only after Jeff Bleckner filmed a TV remake of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” in 1998 did the studio decide to revise and put this script into production, but they only started working on it in 2004.
- Filming took place in the cities of Whittier and Pasadena, California, starting on March 29, 2006. The houses used for filming the neighboring mansions of Mr. Turner and Kayle are actually located in different cities.
- The film initially received an R rating, but after editing, distributors gave it a PG-13 rating.
- Steven Spielberg came up with a scene where a young boy rides a bicycle with an enormous front wheel.
- While preparing for the role, the lead actor Shia LaBeouf spoke with many people under house arrest. This is how the scene with the Twinkie tower came about.
- In the scene where Ronnie first appears at Kyle's, the director decided at the last minute to add a jar of nuts and asked actor Aaron Yoo to use it somehow in the shot.
- The scene between Kyle and his father at the beginning of the film was improvised.
- In the first episode of season 6 of 'Bart the Darkness' of 'The Simpsons', Bart breaks his leg and has to spend the summer at home. He suspects his neighbor Ned Flanders has killed his wife, Maude. The scene where Lisa Simpson breaks into the Flanders' house is very similar to the scene from the film where Ronnie ends up at Turner's.
