Life, and Nothing More…

Abbas Kiarostami wrote and directed Life, and Nothing More…, a 1992 Iranian film that follows a filmmaker and his young son, Puya, as they drive into the Gilan region of northern Iran shortly after the devastating 1990 earthquake. The director is looking for the children who appeared in his earlier film, which had been shot in the same villages, wanting to know whether they survived. The journey carries the two through ruined settlements and encounters with survivors, and the father and son come to know each other better along the way. Farhad Kheradmand plays the film director and Pouya Payvar plays his son, with Hossein Rezai also appearing; twenty-five performers are credited in all.

The film sits twelfth among the twenty-two features Kiarostami directed, arriving after Close-Up and before Through the Olive Trees, which would revisit the same production. It was produced by Ali Reza Zarrin for Kanoon.

On IMDb, voters have given it 7.9 out of 10 from around nine thousand votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.7 from a much smaller group of under two hundred. A critics' rating of 8.7 from fifteen reviews places it higher than either audience figure, suggesting stronger approval among professional reviewers than among the wider viewing public.
