Giorgino
Short description
Set in October 1918, this French production follows Giorgio Volli, a young doctor returning to civilian life after the war. He travels to a remote village surrounded by marshes and forests to find a group of children he once cared for. Upon his arrival, he encounters a mysterious woman named Catherine and discovers a community where local residents are hostile and believe Catherine is responsible for the deaths of the children.
The film was directed by Laurent Boutonnat, who also served as a producer and co-wrote the screenplay with Gilles Laurent. The cast features Jeff Dahlgren in the lead role alongside Mylène Farmer, Frances Barber, Joss Ackland, Jean-Pierre Aumont, and Louise Fletcher, with a total of 54 credited performers.
Produced by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and Heathcliff, the movie had a budget of 12 million USD. It has received generally positive feedback from viewers, holding a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb based on 1,200 votes and a 6.4/10 on TMDB from 45 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began in December 1992. In May 1993, editing and the creation of the musical score followed. For this, Laurent Boutonnat returned to the Czech Republic to record music with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
- Hugh Grant turned down the role of Giorgio Volli.
- Laurent Boutonnat dreamed of making the film as early as 1982. Work on the picture eventually began in 1992 in Slovakia.
- While preparing for filming, Mylène Farmer spent a long time observing the behavior of the mentally ill.
- It took about a year to complete the final edit. The editors had over 10 hours of footage. The version Laurent wanted to release was 4 hours long (with many scenes featuring Mylène). But AMLF, the distributor, asked him to cut another hour to release the film for sale.
- The sets for "Georgino" were created by Pierre Guffroy, who had worked with Jean Cocteau himself.
