Short description
Sal Paradise, a young New York writer, meets Dean Moriarty, a charismatic former convict, shortly after the death of Sal's father. The two become fast friends, and together with Dean's wife Marylou they leave their old lives behind and set out across the country. Their journey becomes a search for personal freedom and for experience itself, as they travel, meet new people and reconnect with old acquaintances. The film adapts Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel, a defining work of the Beat generation, and is set in the late 1940s.
Walter Salles directed, working from a screenplay by José Rivera, with Roman Coppola among the producers. On the Road is the seventh feature in the chronological list of Salles's directing credits, arriving between To Each His Own Cinema and Venice 70: Future Reloaded. Garrett Hedlund plays Dean, Sam Riley plays Sal and Kristen Stewart plays Marylou, with Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge and Danny Morgan also appearing. The production involved 73 credited cast members and 51 credited crew.
Released in 2012, the film had a budget of 25 million dollars and took about 9 million dollars worldwide. Audience response was moderate: it holds 6 out of 10 on IMDb from 45,000 votes and 5.6 out of 10 on TMDB from 920 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 152 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- On May 8, 2012, “IFC Films”, “Sundance Selects”, and “AMC” became the film's distributors in the United States.
- Kristen Stewart agreed to a fee of less than $200,000 after the film's budget was drastically cut. Stewart remained committed to the role of Marylou because she greatly enjoys Jack Kerouac's original novel.
- Filming began in August 2010 in Montreal, Canada. From Montreal, the production moved to Quebec, Calgary, Mexico, Arizona, Louisiana, California, Argentina, and Chile.
- Before filming began, director Walter Salles made the cast live in a “Beat Generation camp” for three weeks. Kristen Stewart described it as three weeks of reading literature about the Beat Generation and listening to audio interviews with Jack Kerouac.
- Johnny Depp turned down the role of Sal Paradise when the film was still in development in the early 90s.
- Lindsay Lohan was considered for the role of Marylou.
- The character of Viggo Mortensen is based on writer William Burroughs. A film, "Naked Lunch" (1991), was made based on his work, "The Naked Lunch," by David Cronenberg.
