The Thirteenth Year
Short description
Cody Griffin is a talented teenage swimmer who discovers a surprising truth about his heritage on his thirteenth birthday. As he begins to develop scales and fins, he learns that his biological mother was a mermaid. This physical transformation forces Cody to navigate the challenges of adolescence while deciding whether to remain in his current life or embrace his aquatic origins. He manages these changes with the help of his friend Jess and while dealing with his feelings for a classmate named Sam.
This American television movie was produced by Disney Branded Television along with Dream City Films, Mike Jacobs Jr. Productions, and Utica Productions. Directed by Duwayne Dunham, it follows his previous work on Halloweentown and precedes Double Teamed!. The screenplay was written by Jenny Arata and the cast features Chez Starbuck, Justin Jon Ross, Courtnee Draper, Brent Briscoe, Tim Redwine, and Dave Coulier.
The film has received a moderate reception from viewers. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 5.9/10 based on 6,700 votes, while it has a higher score of 6.6/10 on TMDB from 256 votes.

- During the auditions, Chez Starbuck (who played the main character, Cody Griffin) had to demonstrate his own swimming skills.
- Chez Starbuck was cast in the lead role despite having absolutely no acting experience, and a coach was assigned to him for the duration of filming.
- During the filming of the final scene, in which Cody, transformed into a merman, jumps out of the water, Chez Starbuck held onto a rope, and was pulled out of the water. The filming took place in a pool on the studio lot, and three scuba divers were in the water with Starbuck.
