Short description

Sean Vetter is a Drug Enforcement Administration agent working the drug trade along the Mexican border with his partner, Demetrius Hicks. After the two bring down a leading cartel figure, a mysterious newcomer known as Diablo takes control of the operation. When Vetter's wife is killed during a failed strike, he and Hicks set out to work their way up the chain toward the man behind it. The former cartel boss, now behind bars, becomes a possible ally in that effort, though Vetter's determination to settle the score complicates the mission.

F. Gary Gray directed the film from a screenplay by Christian Gudegast and Paul T. Scheuring, with Vin Diesel producing and starring as Vetter. Larenz Tate plays Hicks, and the cast also includes Timothy Olyphant, Geno Silva, Jacqueline Obradors and Steve Eastin. It followed Gray's The Negotiator and The Italian Job and was released the same year as the latter, sitting between them in his filmography.

The film was released in April 2003 and runs 109 minutes. Made for a budget of 36 million USD, it took in 44 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 51,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 out of 10 from roughly a thousand votes. A film critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10 from 129 reviews is noticeably lower than those audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In 2000-2001, the film was being shot under the title “Diablo.” However, the well-known computer game development company Blizzard Entertainment sued the filmmakers, claiming they held the rights to the Diablo trademark (the name of a series of Action/RPG computer games). As a result, the filmmakers were forced to come up with a new title for their film.
