Red Hook Summer follows Flik Royale, a boy from a comfortable life in Atlanta who is sent to spend the summer in the Red Hook housing projects of Brooklyn with a grandfather he has never met. His grandfather, Enoch Rouse, is a strict and fiery preacher determined to bring his grandson to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Bored, friendless and far from home, Flik finds his days dominated by Sunday services and Enoch's theatrical sermons, with the spirited Chazz Morningstar, a girl from the church, offering the main distraction. Over the course of a hot summer, the differing plans and agendas of the people around him come into conflict.
Spike Lee directed and produced the film, his eighteenth feature in chronological order, following Miracle at St. Anna and preceding Bad 25. He wrote the screenplay with James McBride. Clarke Peters plays Enoch, with Nate Parker as Box, Thomas Jefferson Byrd as Deacon Zee, Toni Lysaith as Chazz, Jules Brown as Flik and Heather Simms as Sister Sharon Morningstar, among a credited cast of 45. The drama runs 125 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.3 from around 2,100 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 65 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
