Robot & Frank
Short description
Set in the near future, Robot & Frank follows an ageing man named Frank who lives alone and prefers to manage without the technology that has become part of everyday life around him. He spends much of his time at the local library, partly for the company of the librarian, Jennifer. His adult children, Hunter and Madison, worry about his growing forgetfulness, and Hunter gives him a caretaker robot to help at home. Frank resists at first, then comes to accept the practical support and the robot's company. That bond also draws him back toward the jewel theft that was once his trade.
The film was directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Christopher Ford. It was Schreier's first feature, followed later by Paper Towns, Thunderbolts*, Fear of Missing Out and an untitled X-Men film. Frank Langella plays Frank, with James Marsden and Liv Tyler as his children, Susan Sarandon as Jennifer, Peter Sarsgaard as the voice of the robot and Jeremy Strong as Jake. The production had a budget of 3 million US dollars and took a similar amount worldwide, a modest result for a small independent release.
On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 67,000 votes, with a slightly lower 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 137 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a film received about as warmly by reviewers as by viewers.

- The film is inspired by Frank Sidebottom, but in addition, the plot was also inspired by musicians such as Daniel Johnston and Don Van Vliet (better known by the pseudonym Captain Beefheart).
- John Ronson, co-writer of the screenplay, was part of Frank Sidebottom's band, and initially, it was planned to adapt his work. However, a decision was later made to base the film on fictional events.
