A young couple, Marjorie and Paul Worden, move into an old farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania with their children. Paul commutes to the city for work, leaving Marjorie at home, where she begins to hear a crying baby at night and to witness other disturbances that cannot be explained rationally. Paul dismisses her fears as imagination. The presence in the house is not content to frighten the family, and the situation escalates.
The film was directed by Steven Spielberg, the third of the forty films credited to him chronologically, following Duel and preceding The Sugarland Express. Robert Clouse wrote the screenplay, and Alan Jay Factor produced it for CBS Entertainment Productions and Belford Productions. Sandy Dennis plays Marjorie and Darren McGavin plays Paul, with Ralph Bellamy, Jeff Corey, Johnny Whitaker and John Rubinstein among a credited cast of twenty-eight. Made as a television movie running seventy-three minutes, it belongs to the early television work that preceded Spielberg's theatrical features.
On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from sixty votes, a modest showing that places it among the less widely embraced entries in his filmography.
