Trishna is a young woman living with her family in rural Rajasthan, where she works alongside her father. When he is hurt in a road accident, the household looks to her to bring in money, and her situation changes with the arrival of Jay, the son of a wealthy businessman who has grown up in England and is visiting to look after his father's hotel interests. He offers her work at the hotel, and the two begin a relationship that crosses class lines in a society where tradition and rapid change pull in different directions. Michael Winterbottom directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles and moving its story to contemporary India.
The film was released in 2011 and runs 117 minutes. It is the tenth of the fifteen features Winterbottom has directed in chronological order, arriving between The Killer Inside Me and Everyday. Freida Pinto plays Trishna and Riz Ahmed plays Jay, with Mita Vashisht, Harish Khanna, Roshan Seth and Leela Madhauram among a credited cast of twenty-four. Anurag Kashyap, Melissa Parmenter and Winterbottom produced, and the production involved Film i Väst, the UK Film Council, Head Gear Films and Revolution Films.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 3,400 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6 out of 10, from a much smaller base of 56 votes. The two audiences therefore land in the same place, though the larger sample on IMDb gives that figure more weight.
