Short description

A group of friends travels into the Amazon to gather evidence that ritual cannibalism among indigenous tribes is a myth. Their expedition takes a different turn when they cross paths with two Americans, Mike Logan and Joe Costolani, who are hiding out in the jungle after mistreating and enslaving members of a local tribe while searching for emeralds. The tribe has turned against the men, seeking payback, and the newcomers are drawn into the violence.

Umberto Lenzi directed and wrote the screenplay for this Italian production, made by Dania Film, National Cinematografica and Medusa Distribuzione. It followed his Nightmare City and Eaten Alive! and arrived as the fifth of the five films listed in his directorial chronology. The cast includes Giovanni Lombardo Radice as Mike Logan, Lorraine De Selle as Gloria Davis, Danilo Mattei as Rudy Davis, Zora Kerova as Pat Johnson, Walter Lucchini as Joe Costolani and Fiamma Maglione as Myra Stenn; Luciano Martino and Mino Loy produced.

The film runs 93 minutes and mixes adventure and horror. Audiences rate it modestly: on IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 271 votes. A critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from five reviews places it a little below the viewer scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • All five scenes with animals were filmed using real animals.
  • Umberto Lenzi was nearly imprisoned for this film, as the judge handling the case could not believe that all the scenes of violence against people were the result of special effects.
  • The painting was banned in 31 countries worldwide, a fact that was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
