Short description
Movie 43 is an American comedy built around a series of short segments that are tied together by a framing story. A screenwriter pitches his wild ideas to a studio executive, and those pitches become the film's sketches. The segments include a man whose unusual anatomy causes problems on a date, a homeschooling couple whose approach to their son is extreme, and other comic situations involving dating and superheroes. In some countries the connecting material differs, following teenagers who set out to find a banned film.
The film was directed by a large group of filmmakers, among them Griffin Dunne, Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Banks, James Gunn, Steven Brill, Brett Ratner, Bob Odenkirk and Rusty Cundieff. For several of them it sits between other projects: it came between Peter Farrelly's The Three Stooges and Dumb and Dumber To, and it was Elizabeth Banks's first directing credit, ahead of Pitch Perfect 2. The cast is headlined by Dennis Quaid, Greg Kinnear, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Jeremy Allen White and Liev Schreiber, and the film credits around a hundred performers and over a hundred crew members.
Produced for about 6 million dollars, Movie 43 went on to take roughly 32 million dollars worldwide. Its ratings are low: on IMDb it holds 4.4 out of 10 from over 121,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A film critics' rating of 2.7 out of 10 from 87 reviews places it below even those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- George Clooney turned down a cameo role as himself in a scene where he would have been shown awkwardly hitting on women.
- Colin Farrell could have played the role of the leprechaun.
- The film was shot over the course of four years due to the actors' tight schedules. The segment with Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet was filmed first, and producer Charles B. Wessler used it to secure funding for the entire project. He went to great lengths to cast famous actors in the shorts, and most agreed to spend a few days filming. Almost none of the actors knew what the other segments were about or what the movie was overall. When the film was released, none of the famous actors wanted to advertise or promote it.
- The credits state that Bob Odenkirk directed two segments, but these scenes are not present in the American release.
- Work on the film began under the direction of Overture Films. Later, Relativity Media took over the film, and a few months after that, Relativity Media bought Overture Films.
- Trey Parker and Matt Stone could have been involved in directing the film, but they declined.
- The film did not have a preview screening for film critics.
- Anton Yelchin was originally in an episode directed by Bob Odenkirk. He played the role of a necrophile. But after extremely negative feedback at a test screening, Yelchin left the project.
