Il Divo

Il Divo centres on Giulio Andreotti, the Italian politician who served as prime minister seven times and became a byword for enduring power in the decades after the Second World War. Set in Rome in the early 1990s, the film follows him as he moves toward another term at the head of government while prosecutors begin to examine his alleged ties to the Sicilian Mafia. Repentant mobsters implicate him in Cosa Nostra crimes, and the accusations unsettle a career built on calm, calculation and ambiguity. Andreotti is shown as a small, softly spoken man with a dry sense of humour, a devout Catholic routine and a talent for surviving scandals that would have ended other careers; the trial over Mafia association forms the film's central conflict.

Paolo Sorrentino wrote and directed the film, his second feature after The Consequences of Love. Toni Servillo plays Andreotti, heading a large cast of 86 credited performers that includes Anna Bonaiuto, Giulio Bosetti, Flavio Bucci, Carlo Buccirosso and Giorgio Colangeli.

The film was released in 2008 and runs 113 minutes. Made for about 7 million dollars, it returned roughly 11 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from around 20,000 votes and on TMDB 7.6 out of 10 from about 1,200 votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 out of 10, drawn from 51 reviews, is slightly above the audience scores.
