The Bank Job
Short description
Terry Leather is a small-time car dealer in 1970s London who wants to leave his dodgy past behind and settle down. When Martine Love, a model from his old neighbourhood, brings him a proposal to break into a bank vault, he senses the risk but also sees a chance he may never get again. Terry gathers a crew and they tunnel into the vault, clearing out the safe deposit boxes. What the men do not know is that Martine is not being entirely straight with them, and that the contents of one particular box are of interest to British intelligence, which has its own reasons for wanting the job done.
Roger Donaldson directed the film, the twelfth of the fifteen features he has made, following The World's Fastest Indian and preceding Seeking Justice. Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Jason Statham as Terry, with Saffron Burrows as Martine, alongside Stephen Campbell Moore, Daniel Mays, James Faulkner and Andrew Brooke. The film is based on events in Britain in 1971.
Made for a budget of 20 million dollars, the film took about 65 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from roughly 197,000 votes, while on TMDB the rating is 6.9 from around 2,700 votes. A critics' rating stands at 7 out of 10 from 142 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in London, from January to March 2007.
- According to director Roger Donaldson, the most difficult scene to shoot was the one in the brothel, where, according to the script, the women were supposed to be wearing only garters. It turned out that the women had shaved their pubic areas, which was unsuitable considering the story takes place in 1971. They had to create special pubic hairpieces from artificial hair, but keeping them in place proved difficult, and they kept falling off.
- The film is based on real events from the life of Margaret (1930-2002), Princess of Great Britain, Countess of Snowdon – on the story of her love affairs with Jamaicans in the 1970s and the story with photographs hidden in a bank vault.
