Tosca

Set in papal Rome, this drama follows the singer Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi. To save Mario from a death sentence, Tosca attempts to manipulate Baron Scarpia, who offers a fake execution in exchange for her compliance. However, the Baron betrays her, leading to Mario's actual death. After killing Scarpia, Tosca takes her own life by jumping from the walls of Castel Sant'Angelo.

Benoît Jacquot directed this 2001 production, which followed his previous work, Sade. The film stars Angela Gheorghiu in the title role alongside Roberto Alagna and Ruggero Raimondi. The musical elements feature the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, led by Antonio Pappano. Produced by Axiom Films in the United Kingdom, the project had a budget of 53 million USD.
