Flame & Citron

Set in Copenhagen during the German occupation of Denmark in 1944, Flame & Citron follows two resistance fighters known by their codenames. Flame is the younger and more idealistic of the pair, eager to take the fight directly to the occupying forces, while Citron is more cautious and increasingly drawn into the political maneuvering around them. Working for a resistance leader with Allied connections, they carry out assassinations of Danish informants and collaborators, and are soon permitted to target Germans as well. As doubts grow about the legitimacy of their orders, the two men find their mission and their trust in those around them harder to navigate.

Ole Christian Madsen directed and co-wrote the film with Lars Andersen and Lars K. Andersen. It is the earliest of the three features listed for Madsen, followed by Itsi Bitsi in 2015 and Boundless in 2024. Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen lead the cast as the two central figures, with Stine Stengade, Peter Mygind, Mille Lehfeldt and Christian Berkel in supporting roles. The production was an international effort involving companies and funding from several European countries, with a budget of about 45 million USD and a worldwide box office of roughly 10 million USD.
