Friends with Money
Short description
Friends with Money centres on Olivia, a single woman in her mid-thirties living in Los Angeles who has left a well-paying job and now cleans houses for a living. Her three closest friends are wealthier and more settled: Franny, whose family life looks effortless; Christine, a screenwriter struggling to work with her husband; and Jane, a fashion designer whose marriage has lost its spark. Olivia leans on them as she drifts, but each of the friends is dealing with troubles of her own, and the balance of who supports whom begins to shift.
Nicole Holofcener wrote and directed the film, her third feature after Angry and Lovely & Amazing and the middle entry in a run of films about contemporary women. Jennifer Aniston plays Olivia, with Joan Cusack, Catherine Keener and Frances McDormand as Franny, Christine and Jane; Jason Isaacs and Scott Caan also appear. Anthony Bregman produced, and the film runs 88 minutes.
Released in April 2006, Friends with Money was made for about 7 million dollars and took roughly 13 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 156 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 5.1/10 from 618 votes, a gap that suggests reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did. It sits between Lovely & Amazing and Please Give in Holofcener's filmography.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene at the farmers' fair was filmed with the permission of the administration, but without hiring any extras. Many of the people shown on screen were ordinary customers and onlookers who didn't even realize that actresses Frances McDormand and Jennifer Aniston were among them. Nevertheless, a few paparazzi managed to sneak onto the fairgrounds in hopes of photographing Aniston.
- In accordance with Frances McDormand’s filming contract, which stipulated she had to return to her family in New York by a certain date, the last week of filming took place there. They mainly filmed her character at home and the scene where Jane hits her head on a glass door.
- Screenwriter Nicole Holofcener wrote the role of Christina specifically for Catherine Keener, and gave her the script to read before anyone else. Keener also helped her choose other actresses for the project.
- Simon McBurney, who played Aaron, was literally torn between Los Angeles, where filming took place, and London, where he was directing a play at a theater. He made 4 or 5 flights from the UK to the US, and spent a couple of days on set each time.
