American Dreamz

American Dreamz is a comedy about a hugely popular television singing competition of the same name, and the people whose ambitions collide around it. Martin Tweed, the show's host, is looking for a contestant who can top everything that has come before. Among those drawn into the new season are an aspiring young singer from the Midwest, a performer from Orange County with a taste for show tunes, and a man who has spent time in a training camp abroad. Meanwhile, President Staton, whose approval has fallen sharply, is persuaded to appear on the program as a guest judge, a decision that puts the White House and the contest on the same stage.

Paul Weitz wrote and directed the film, his fifth as director in chronological order, following In Good Company and preceding Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. Hugh Grant plays Tweed, with Dennis Quaid as President Staton, Mandy Moore as Sally Kendoo, Willem Dafoe as the Chief of Staff, Chris Klein as William Williams, and Jennifer Coolidge as Martha Kendoo. The production, made with a budget of 17 million USD, is a satire of politics and television.
