Tabu

Tabu is set in Lisbon in 2010, where Pilar, a devout woman committed to social causes, lives in the same building as her neighbour Aurora, an elderly woman with a volatile temper and a gambling habit. Aurora's past haunts her, and when her health declines she asks Pilar to track down a man named Gian Luca Ventura. Pilar's search uncovers a love affair and a crime that took place decades earlier in colonial Africa, a chapter Aurora had kept hidden from everyone around her.

The film is directed by Miguel Gomes, who wrote the screenplay with Mariana Ricardo. It is the earlier of two features listed for Gomes, preceding Grand Tour. Laura Soveral plays the older Aurora and Ana Moreira her younger self, with Teresa Madruga as Pilar, Henrique Espírito Santo and Carloto Cotta as the older and younger Gian Luca Ventura, and Isabel Cardoso as Santa. It was produced by Sandro Aguilar and Luís Urbano, a co-production between Germany, Brazil, Portugal and France.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 7,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a much smaller voter pool. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 62 reviews places it somewhat above the audience score on IMDb, suggesting stronger support among reviewers than among the wider viewing public.
