Deep Rising
Short description
Deep Rising is an action horror film about a luxury ocean liner that has been left drifting and apparently deserted in the South China Sea. A group of heavily armed mercenaries, led by the boat captain John Finnegan, boards the ship intending to rob it, only to find the passengers and crew dead and the decks strewn with evidence of something violent. They soon discover that the vessel has been taken over by large tentacled sea creatures that feed on the people aboard, and the would-be thieves must fight alongside the few survivors they find to get off the ship alive.
Stephen Sommers wrote and directed the film, which sits between The Jungle Book and The Mummy in his filmography, continuing a run of adventure-driven pictures he made in the 1990s. Treat Williams plays Finnegan, with Famke Janssen as Trillian St. James, Anthony Heald as Simon Canton, Kevin J. O'Connor as Joey Pantucci, Wes Studi as Hanover and Derrick O'Connor as Captain Atherton.
Released in January 1998, the film cost around 45 million dollars to make but took in only about 11 million worldwide, a result that left it far short of its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from over 40,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from several hundred votes, while critics were harsher, scoring it 4.3 from 35 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- The presentation of the soundtrack album to the film, composed by Jerry Goldsmith, took place three days before its premiere – on January 27, 1998.
- The film character, con artist Trillian, was named after a character from Douglas Adams’ well-known book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” whose full name in the book was Trisha McMillan, but everyone called her Trillian.
- Claire Forlani was originally cast as Trillian, but after three days of filming, she was replaced by Famke Janssen due to disagreements with the director.
- The film was shot in Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada).
- The weapons used by the pirates were heavily modified Calico M960 submachine guns.
