Martyrs

Martyrs is a Canadian-French horror drama directed and written by Pascal Laugier. It centres on Lucie, a girl found wandering a country road in early 1970s France after being held captive for months. Her body shows no signs of sexual abuse, and she is unable to explain what happened to her. Placed in a care facility, she forms a close friendship with another girl, Anna. The trauma stays with Lucie into adulthood, and she eventually confronts a family in their home at gunpoint, convinced she has found those responsible. The story follows Lucie and Anna as they are drawn into a violent search for the truth behind what was done to her.

The film was Laugier's second feature, following House of Voices in 2004 and preceding The Tall Man in 2012 and Ghostland in 2018. Mylène Jampanoï plays the adult Lucie and Morjana Alaoui plays Anna, with Catherine Bégin, Robert Toupin and Patricia Tulasne among the supporting cast. Richard Grandpierre produced the film for Wild Bunch, Eskwad, Canal+ and TCB Films, with a budget of about 7 million USD.

Martyrs took roughly 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 7/10 from around 119,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3/10 from more than 3,000 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 6.5/10 from 41 reviews.
