Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. follows two Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who stumble into a parallel dimension beneath the city. This underground world is ruled by the tyrant King Koopa and inhabited by the descendants of dinosaurs. When a young paleontologist named Daisy is taken captive because of a meteorite fragment in her possession, the brothers set out to rescue her and stop Koopa from extending his power into the human world.

The film was directed by Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton, who had previously made D.O.A. together in 1988, and it was released in 1993. Ed Solomon, Parker Bennett and Terry Runte wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Bob Hoskins as Mario, John Leguizamo as Luigi, Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, Samantha Mathis as Daisy, Fisher Stevens as Iggy and Richard Edson as Spike.

Made on a budget of 48 million dollars, the film took in about 21 million dollars worldwide, a fraction of its cost. Audiences have rated it poorly: on IMDb it holds 4.2 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.5 out of 10 from roughly 1,500 votes. A film critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10 from 44 reviews places it in line with those audience scores. Jankel went on to direct Tell It to the Bees in 2019 and Desperate Journey in 2025.
