Set during the Great Depression, this drama follows George and Lennie, two migrant workers drifting through California in search of jobs. George looks after Lennie, a physically powerful man with the mind of a child, who repeatedly lands the pair in trouble. They take work on a ranch, hoping to save enough money for a small place of their own, but friction with the owner's son and his unhappy wife puts their fragile plan at risk.
The film is based on John Steinbeck's novella of the same name. Gary Sinise directed and stars as George, with John Malkovich as Lennie. Horton Foote wrote the screenplay, and Sinise produced with Russell Smith. The cast includes Ray Walston as Candy, Casey Siemaszko as Curley, Sherilyn Fenn as Curley's Wife and John Terry as Slim. Sinise had acted extensively before this, and directing the adaptation placed him at the helm of a major Hollywood production.
Released in September 1992, the film took about six million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a studio release. Audiences rate it 7.4 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.2 out of 10 on TMDB, while a film critics' rating of 8.1 out of 10 from 30 reviews places it higher among reviewers than among general viewers.
