Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale - Part 1: The Sun Flag

In 1930, the Seediq people of Taiwan live under Japanese colonial rule, their traditions suppressed and their labor exploited. Among them is Mona Rudao, a clan leader who has watched his people lose their land, their customs and their dignity for decades. When a confrontation with Japanese authority pushes tensions past breaking point, he brings together rival clans to rise up against the colonial forces, setting up a battle between a few hundred warriors and a far larger, better-equipped army.

Wei Te-sheng directs and wrote the screenplay, following his 2008 debut Cape No. 7. The film is the first of the two-part Taiwanese edition of his Warriors of the Rainbow project, which was followed by Part 2: The Rainbow Bridge in 2011 and a combined international version in 2012. Producers include John Woo and Terence Chang. Nolay Piho plays Mona Rudao, with Umin Boya, Masanobu Ando, Sabu Kawahara, Vivian Hsu and Irene Luo among the cast.

Released in September 2011, the film runs 144 minutes. It had a budget of about 25 million dollars and took roughly 29 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from about 7,600 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 out of 10 from around 119 votes. Its critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 16 reviews, somewhat below the audience scores.
