Wolf Creek
Short description
Three young travellers set off on a road trip through the Australian outback, intending to visit Wolf Creek, a vast meteorite crater far from any town. Their car breaks down in the remote landscape, and a local man named Mick Taylor offers to help. His assistance turns out to be a trap, and the trip becomes a fight for survival against a violent stranger.
Wolf Creek was released in 2005 and marked Greg McLean's first time in the director's chair, a position he also filled as writer and producer. John Jarratt plays Mick Taylor, with Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi and Nathan Phillips as the three travellers. Made for around one million dollars, the film took roughly thirty-one times that amount at the box office worldwide, a strong return for an independent production. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from about 84,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.2, from a much smaller pool of around 1,300 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 119 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both sites. McLean went on to direct Rogue in 2007 and returned to the same character in Wolf Creek 2 in 2013.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is prohibited from distribution in the Republic of Belarus.
- The film is based on the crimes of a real Australian serial killer named Ivan Milat.
- An inexplicable incident occurred during filming. Part of the crew traveled to the crater (which was located far from any housing) and decided to camp there overnight after filming. In the middle of the night, a stranger in a small truck appeared at the campsite, looking exactly like Mick (played by John Jarrett). The filmmakers were so terrified that they packed up and fled the site in the middle of the night.
- Neither cloudy weather nor rain were specifically written into the script. The filming schedule was so tight that they had to shoot regardless of the weather conditions. If it happened to be raining outside during a scheduled scene, the script was rewritten on the fly, a couple of lines about the bad weather were inserted, and filming would begin.
- During the filming of the scene in which Mick (played by John Jarrett) tortures Christie (Kestie Morassi), director and screenwriter Greg McLean ordered everyone involved in the production to leave the shed where they were filming, leaving only the two actors inside. When he shouted "Action!" and the camera started rolling, everything went well at first, but after about a minute, it began to seem to him that Jarrett might be going too far—Morassi's screams for help sounded so genuine. He burst into the shed, greatly surprising the actors, who were perfectly fine. It turned out that Morassi had simply immersed herself in the role and was screaming very convincingly.
- During filming, only a couple of takes were shot directly according to the script, and the actors were otherwise allowed to improvise. Many scenes in the film were the result of pure improvisation.
