Kate & Leopold

If they lived in the same century, they'd be perfect for each other.

Short description

Kate McKay is a driven advertising executive in present-day New York, focused on her career and living alongside her brother Charlie and her ex-boyfriend Stuart, a scientist with an interest in time travel. When Stuart finds a way to cross into the nineteenth century, his experiment brings back Leopold, a duke from that era, into the modern city. With Stuart temporarily out of the picture after an accident, Kate ends up responsible for the well-mannered visitor, who has to find his footing in a world of skyscrapers and modern customs while Charlie takes him for an actor. Kate and Leopold grow closer as she shows him her century, but his presence in the present carries a risk: if he stays, the past he left behind could change.

James Mangold directed and co-wrote the film with Steven Rogers, and Cathy Konrad produced it. It was Mangold's fourth feature as director in chronological order, following Girl, Interrupted and preceding Identity. Meg Ryan plays Kate, Hugh Jackman plays Leopold, and Liev Schreiber appears as Stuart, with Breckin Meyer, Natasha Lyonne and Bradley Whitford in supporting roles.

Released in late 2001, the film had a budget of 48 million dollars and took in about 76 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from roughly 94,000 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 6.4 from about 1,522 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 from 132 reviews places it below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the scene where Kate leaves work before the merger party, her assistant calls the elevator for her and does not press the button, but simply touches her finger to the panel next to the button.
  • Sandra Bullock was initially considered for the role of Kate.
  • The opera 'La Bohème' was written in 1896, Leo was born in 1876, meaning he couldn't have known about it.
  • Filming took place from February 20th to May 22nd, 2001.
  • Before filming, Hugh Jackman, who played the role of aristocrat Leopold in the film, traveled to England and took lessons in good manners, dancing, and horseback riding.
  • At the beginning of the film, Leopold wakes up in Stuart's apartment and confusedly shouts, "Perhaps you are Jack the Ripper? You dragged me here to do your dark deed…", however, in 1876, Leopold could not have known anything about Jack the Ripper, as he committed his murders in 1888.
  • In one scene in the film, Leopold accidentally turns on the television, which is broadcasting an episode of the British science fiction series 'The Prisoner' (1967-1968).
  • At the beginning of the film, there is a scene where John Roebling, the designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, delivers a speech to the public. The film is set in 1876, and the error is that John Roebling could not have spoken at that time, as he died on July 22, 1869, and did not live to see the start of construction on the bridge according to his design.
