Short description
Jack Crow leads a team of mercenaries who hunt vampires on behalf of the Vatican. After wiping out a nest in the New Mexico desert, the group is ambushed by Valek, a powerful vampire who has eluded them. Crow and his partner Montoya survive and set out for revenge, joined by a young priest and a woman who has been bitten by Valek and shares a mental link with him. Valek, meanwhile, is pursuing the Cross of Berziers, a relic he believes can let vampires withstand daylight.
John Carpenter directed the film, the nineteenth of the twenty-two features he has made, following Escape from L.A. and preceding Ghosts of Mars. Don Jakoby wrote the screenplay, and Sandy King produced. James Woods plays Crow, with Daniel Baldwin as Montoya, Sheryl Lee as Katrina, Thomas Ian Griffith as Valek, Maximilian Schell as Cardinal Alba and Tim Guinee as Father Adam Guiteau.
Released in 1998, the film cost about 20 million dollars and took in roughly the same amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 68,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from about 1,400 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 53 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Steakley and was filmed over two months – from June 2nd to August 4th, 1997.
- Screenwriter Dan Mazur appears in the credits only during the film's release in Europe, but his name disappeared from the list of the film's creators at the premiere in the USA in 1998.
- American director and screenwriter Frank Darabont played the episodic role of the car owner who forcefully takes the car from Montoya.
- Filming took place in the state of New Mexico (USA), in the cities of Stanley, Santa Fe, Cerrillos, San Julian Pueblo, and Las Vegas.
- When Russell Malkey and Dolph Lundgren left the project, and John Carpenter took over directing the film with James Woods in the lead role, the studio decided to cut the film's budget by 2/3. This was done immediately before the start of the production process, so the screenwriter and director had to urgently and radically rewrite the script to fit within the new budget.
- John Stickley, the author of the original novel, said after the film's premiere that the film contains most of his dialogue but none of his plot points.
- The symbol on the pendant worn by Montoya is a Norse rune meaning 'protector'.
