Asterix & Obelix: God Save Britannia

Set in 50 BC, this French adventure comedy follows Julius Caesar as he turns his attention to Britannia after failing to subdue a small Gaulish village. His legions overwhelm most of the island, but one settlement holds out under Queen Cordelia. With its defenders tiring, she sends her most trusted officer to Gaul to seek help from the village known for resisting Rome. There, Asterix and Obelix are already occupied with a task from their chief: turning his visiting nephew Goudurix into a man. They take up the appeal from Britain anyway, crossing the channel with their magic potion, the dog Dogmatix and a good deal of reluctance to aid their friends. The film is based on the comic books Asterix in Britain and Asterix and the Normans.

Laurent Tirard directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Grégoire Vigneron. It was the third feature Tirard directed, arriving between Little Nicholas and Up for Love. Édouard Baer and Gérard Depardieu lead the cast as Asterix and Obelix, with Guillaume Gallienne as the British officer, Vincent Lacoste as Goudurix, Valérie Lemercier as Miss Macintosh and Fabrice Luchini as Caesar.

The production, which involved companies from France, Hungary, Spain, Italy and Belgium, had a budget of about 61 million dollars. Its worldwide gross of roughly the same amount means it did not recover its costs at the box office. Audiences have rated it modestly: on IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.1 out of 10 from about 1,430 votes.
