Short description
Margaret Hale is a southerner from a country vicarage newly settled in the industrial northern town of Milton. In the shock of her move, she misjudges charismatic cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose strength of purpose and passion are a match for her own pride and willfulness. When the workers of Milton call a strike, Margaret takes their side, and the two are brought into deeper conflict. As events spiral out of control, Margaret - to her surprise - begins to fall in love with Thornton...

What's left behind the scenes
- The success of "North and South" came as a great surprise to the BBC, whose producers had expected little from the miniseries and had not promoted it to a wide audience. However, a few hours after the premiere of the first episode, the BBC forum crashed due to the high volume of visitors and had to be shut down. On April 11, 2005, thanks to the incredible success of the series, the channel released it on DVD.
- The miniseries is based on Elizabeth Gaskell's novel "North and South" (1855).
- Tim Piggot-Smith, who plays Mr. Hale in the series, played Frederick, Mr. Hale's son, in the previous adaptation — 'North and South' (1975).
- Richard Armitage's parents have the same names as the main characters of 'North and South' — Margaret and John.
- Richard Armitage was one of the first actors to audition and one of the last to be cast.
- Daniela Denby-Ashe (Margaret) auditioned for the role of Fanny Thornton. However, the producers, who were unable to find an actress for the role of Margaret Hale, decided that Daniela would be perfect for the part of Margaret.
