What's left behind the scenes

  • The series was scheduled to air in the fall of 1998, but due to the escalating Monica Lewinsky scandal, NBC executives decided to push the premiere to the following television season.
  • Most of the episodes in the first four seasons were written personally by Aaron Sorkin, who repurposed certain plots and scenes from his other works for the new series. For example, some ideas and dialogues from the first season were based on drafts from the screenplay of the film 'The American President.' The same can be said for his first series, 'Sports Night,' from which he occasionally borrowed plot conflicts, episode titles, and character names.
  • During the intense work on 'The West Wing,' Aaron's addiction to various drugs worsened, leading to a public scandal. Warner Bros. TV executives began expressing dissatisfaction over frequent delays in the delivery of new scripts and budget overruns. In the spring of 2003, Aaron Sorkin left the project, and with him went his friend, fellow executive producer and series director Thomas Schlamme. The official reason for their departure was never disclosed. The third executive producer, John Wells, agreed to take over the project and remained in that role until the series ended. Starting with the sixth season, directors Chris Misiano and Alex Graves were additionally appointed as executive producers.
  • Aaron Sorkin originally planned to create a political drama about the lives of senior White House staff, while the president would remain mostly off-screen, appearing occasionally in cameo roles. Consequently, Martin Sheen was initially hired for only four episodes, appearing in the pilot just a few minutes before its end. However, the role of Bartlet immediately garnered significant attention from the press and viewers; the response was so overwhelming that the series producers approached Sheen and asked him to join the main cast.
