Short description

Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The series inspired writer Helen Fielding to create the novel and, later, the screenplay for the film 'Bridget Jones's Diary,' which also starred Colin Firth.
  • Actress Julia Sawalha is older than actress Jennifer Ehle, but she plays Lydia, who is six years younger than her sister Elizabeth (played by Jennifer Ehle).
  • The search for an actress to play Georgiana, Darcy's younger sister, proved to be difficult. After reviewing about 70 young actresses, director Simon Langton suggested casting Emilia Fox, the daughter of Joanna David, who was also involved in the project.
  • Producer Sue Bertwisle wanted Colin Firth to play Darcy—a relatively unknown British actor in his thirties with whom she had worked in the mid-1980s on Giles Foster's television melodrama 'The Dutch Girls'. The actor refused for a long time but eventually gave in to her persuasion.
  • The series' famous moment—the sudden encounter between Elizabeth and a half-naked Mr. Darcy emerging from a lake—is absent from Jane Austen's novel. It was devised by screenwriter Andrew Davies, who did not intend to add sensuality to the character, but simply wanted to create a humorous moment where the hero tries to maintain his dignity while looking inappropriate.
