What's left behind the scenes

  • The character of Topanga, played by actress Danielle Fishel, was initially a supporting role; however, she proved so popular from her very first appearances that the actress was promoted to the main cast, and a romantic storyline with the character played by Ben Savage was written into the script.
  • According to Danielle Fishel, producer and writer Michael Jacobs named her character 'Topanga' after the area of the same name in the western part of Los Angeles County. He was driving through there when he received a call demanding a name for the character. According to Jacobs, the actress was lucky he wasn't called a bit later, by the time he reached an area called Canoga Park.
  • Hundreds of people gathered for the casting call for the role of Shawn, but Ryder Strong was first in line, and screenwriter and producer Michael Jacobs ended the auditions right after him.
  • In the first season of the series, the creators and writers wanted to give Cory, played by Ben Savage, another close friend in addition to Shawn (played by Ryder Strong), but nothing came of it.
  • The actors playing Cory and Shawn, Ben Savage and Ryder Strong respectively, did not get along at first. Everything changed after they spent a weekend together at Savage's house. It was then that they came up with their own "signature" handshake, which wasn't in the script, but which the producers loved when Savage and Strong demonstrated it to them.
  • During the filming of the fifth season, Ryder Strong (who played Shawn) decided to leave the project to go to college. Producer and writer Michael Jacobs persuaded him to stay in the cast, promising to develop a filming schedule that would allow Strong to both study and act. He kept that promise.
