The story of the 1912 sinking of the largest luxury liner ever built, the tragedy that befell over two thousand of the rich and famous as well as of the poor and unknown passengers aboard the doomed ship.

What's left behind the scenes

  • When the Carpathia (the passenger steamer that first arrived at the scene of the Titanic's wreck) arrives in New York, it passes the Statue of Liberty, which is shown as green, as it is today. When it was erected in 1886, the statue was brown, and its color only changed around 1920.
  • This television movie was rushed to completion shortly before the release of James Cameron's heavily publicized blockbuster. The film aired on CBS over two consecutive evenings in late November 1996. The first episode attracted a decent audience, but by the following evening, viewership had dropped significantly as viewers disliked the hastily thrown-together telefilm. The movie was rushed into production so quickly that it contained numerous errors and historical inaccuracies, despite the abundance of information about the Titanic and its passengers available by the mid-1990s.
  • In the film, Captain Smith produces rolled-up blueprints to demonstrate the severity of the damage the ship sustained and to state how much longer it would remain afloat. According to testimonies from survivors of the tragedy, in reality, this was done by the creator of the Titanic (1873-1912), Thomas Andrews, who perished that night. Andrews played a significant role in the events of the night of the disaster, but this character does not appear in the film.
  • Despite what is claimed in the film, not all tickets for the Titanic were sold out. More than half of the first and second-class cabins remained empty.
  • The Titanic was built in Belfast, not in Southampton, as claimed in the film.
  • Toward the end of filming, the set had been so damaged by water flows that during the reshooting of certain episodes, extras had to be kept nearby to prevent debris from entering the frame.
  • On the bridge, Captain Smith reads lines from the poem "Sweet and Low" (1849) by the English poet Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892).
