What's left behind the scenes

  • After the series aired in the UK, viewers repeatedly criticized Charles Shaughnessy (who played Maxwell Sheffield) for his 'implausible' British pronunciation, suggesting he take a leaf out of his co-star Daniel Davis's book and practice his pronunciation with him. The actors involved found this quite amusing, as Shaughnessy is actually from the UK, born in London, whereas Davis is an American from Arkansas. A nod to this situation appeared in a storyline in the final season, where Davis's character appears in a school play and is subsequently criticized for how unnatural he sounds on stage.
  • Lauren Lane and Rachel Hagglund became pregnant during the filming of the series' fifth season. Instead of trying to hide this from the viewers, as creators of other projects often do in similar circumstances (by partially obscuring the character behind props or showing them sitting down), the producers here preferred to avoid such tactics. However, they explained the absence of Lane's character from the screen during the final stages of the actress's pregnancy as her departure to a resort.
  • Roddy McDowall also auditioned for the role that eventually went to Daniel Davis. Davis himself believed the part would go to McDowall, but Fran Drescher, who played Fran Fine, reassured him that the role would be his; otherwise, "The Nanny" would have become McDowall's project, "and this is Drescher's project, not McDowall's."
  • During the development of the series concept, it was initially intended that the Sheffield family would have only two children—Brighton and Grace. However, the creators wanted an older daughter for whom Fran could serve as a mentor, so the character of Maggie was specifically created and added to the storyline.
  • Renee Taylor (who played Sylvia Fine) was brought into the project as a guest star; she remained in this capacity throughout the entire series, including the final season, appearing on screen in nearly a hundred episodes.
  • Fran Drescher was returning to London after completing her work on the television series "Princesses" (1991), and on the plane, her seat happened to be next to Jeff Sagansky from CBS. He later became one of the first people in Los Angeles with whom she discussed the idea for "The Nanny."
  • Initially, the series' ratings were unsatisfactory, and the project was nearly canceled after the first season. The show owes its survival to Jeff Sagansky.
  • Rachel Chagdoll's character repeatedly wore outfits that had previously been worn by the character played by Fran Drescher. These included, for example, satin blouses, suit jackets, and even the famous black mini-skirt.
  • Sets used in the sitcom 'The Powers That Be' (1992-1993) were repurposed for the filming of 'The Nanny'.
  • Yetta (played by Anne Morgan Gilbert) told various and often contradictory stories about herself (claiming, for instance, to be a survivor of the Titanic or to have been at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese air raid); the show's writers attributed this quirk to the character's senility.
  • When the series' ratings began to decline, studio executives gave Fran Drescher and director, writer, and producer Peter Marc Jacobson a choice: either the show would be canceled after the fifth season, or Fran Drescher's character and Charles Shaughnessy's character would get married in the fifth season, in which case the project would be renewed.
