The Three Musketeers
Short description
The young Gascon swordsman D'Artagnan travels to Paris to follow his father into the king's musketeers, only to find the corps disbanded. Cardinal Richelieu, the king's scheming advisor, has dissolved the elite guard as part of his design on the throne. Three men have refused to give up their swords: the melancholy Athos, the imposing Porthos and the refined Aramis. D'Artagnan joins them, and together they set out to foil the cardinal's conspiracy against the crown, with the count of Rochefort and the elusive Milady de Winter standing in their way.
Stephen Herek directed this 1993 adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's novel, the fifth of nineteen films he has directed, following The Mighty Ducks and preceding Mr. Holland's Opus. David Loughery wrote the screenplay, and Roger Birnbaum and Joe Roth produced for Walt Disney Pictures and Caravan Pictures, with a budget of 30 million dollars. Chris O'Donnell plays D'Artagnan, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Charlie Sheen play the three musketeers, Tim Curry plays Richelieu and Rebecca De Mornay plays Milady. Twenty-seven cast members and 58 crew members are credited.
The film mixes action and adventure with comedy across its 105-minute running time. It took in 112 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from about 64,000 votes, and on TMDB the same 6.4 from roughly 1,100 votes, so audiences are broadly consistent with each other. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 30 reviews places professional opinion below the audience scores.

- Winona Ryder was considered for the role of Milady de Winter.
- Part of the filming took place in Charlestown (Cornwall, United Kingdom) and Landsee Castle (Burgenland); also in Liechtenstein, Maria-Enzersdorf, Hinterbrühl, Korneuburg (Lower Austria) and Vienna (specifically in the Hofburg). One chase scene was filmed in the Golitha Falls grove by the Fowey River, in Cornwall. The small harbor in the village of Charlestown housed the galleon used in the filming.
- Concurrently with filming, another version of the film from rival studio TriStar was in development, with Johnny Depp and director Jeremiah S. Chechik attached. Ultimately, the development of the other film was shut down.
- The role of D’Artagnan was offered to Brad Pitt and Stephen Dorff, but the actors declined.
