The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Short description
After winning the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return home to District 12, but their victory has made them targets. President Snow regards Katniss as a threat because her actions in the arena have inspired defiance among the districts of Panem. As the two victors are sent on a tour of the districts, they witness growing unrest while being pressured to present themselves as a devoted couple in order to calm the population. The Capitol then announces a special edition of the Games, the Quarter Quell, in which past winners must compete once more. Katniss and Peeta are drawn back into the arena, this time facing experienced tributes from the other districts.
The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, following Constantine, I Am Legend and Water for Elephants, and it is the fourth of the ten titles listed in his directing credits. Michael Arndt and Simon Beaufoy wrote the screenplay, with Jon Kilik and Nina Jacobson producing. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson lead the cast as Katniss and Peeta, alongside Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland.
Released in November 2013, the film had a budget of 130 million US dollars and earned 865 million US dollars worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from around 770,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.4 out of 10 from roughly 19,000 votes, indicating broad approval from viewers. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 291 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The director of the first "Hunger Games," Gary Ross, justified his refusal to shoot a sequel by the overly demanding production schedule.
- Jenna Malone (Joanna Mason) and Donald Sutherland (President Coriolanus Snow) had previously worked together on the sets of "Cold Mountain" and "Pride & Prejudice".
- Some scenes of the Capitol were filmed at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, one of the hotels that hosts the annual 'Dragon*con' convention.
- Sam Claflin broke his finger during filming.
- Towards the end of the scene where the heroes are running from the monkeys, Katniss runs out of arrows in her quiver. In the next scene on the shore, the quiver is full of arrows.
- Zoe Aggeliki and Mia Wasikowska were considered for the role of Johanna Mason before it was given to Jena Malone.
- During filming on the arena set, Jennifer Lawrence hit herself in the head with a bow while running and dove into a pool, which caused her to partially lose her hearing for six days.
- Melissa Leo was considered for the role of Maggs.
- Katniss's sister's cat, which appears in the frame at the very beginning in the Victor's Village, is ginger, although a gray cat was shown in the first part of the film.
- Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, Hunter Parrish, Grant Gustin, Joey Graceffa, Luke Mitchell, and Garrett Hedlund were considered for the role of Finnick Odair. Ultimately, the role went to Sam Claflin.
- The fish that Katniss, Finnick, and Peeta eat in one of the scenes was actually raw.
- The song "Atlas" by Coldplay was the first official soundtrack to the film and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
- The film is based on Suzanne Collins' novel 'Catching Fire' (2009).
- Jenna Malone said that the scene with her nudity was filmed in a working hotel elevator and required considerable endurance from her.
- Filming for the movie began on September 10, 2012, in Atlanta. After Atlanta, filming moved to Hawaii and concluded in December 2012.
- Sam Claflin (Finnick) ate 2-3 pieces of sugar in each take of his introductory scene and ended up consuming an entire package of refined sugar.
- When Cinna is hit in the face against the launch elevator where Katniss is locked, blood remains on the glass, which disappears in the next frame.
