Short description

Leon Kaufman is a photographer in New York who gets a career opportunity from gallery owner Susan Hoff: she believes in his talent but wants work that captures the darkness of the city. Leon begins roaming the streets at night, taking pictures of the violence and desperation he finds there. His girlfriend Maya grows worried as he becomes more and more absorbed in the subject, and his attention fixes on a silent, hulking man named Mahogany, who by day works in a slaughterhouse and by night rides the subway. Leon comes to suspect that Mahogany is behind a series of brutal killings of late-night passengers.

The film is a horror, fantasy and mystery story directed by Ryûhei Kitamura, the sixth of the thirteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The Spear of Longinus and preceding No One Lives. Jeff Buhler wrote the screenplay, and Clive Barker produced alongside Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi. Bradley Cooper plays Leon, with Vinnie Jones as Mahogany, Brooke Shields as Susan Hoff, Leslie Bibb as Maya, Roger Bart as Jurgis and Ted Raimi as Randle Cooper.

Released in August 2008, the film had a budget of 15 million dollars and took about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 75,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.2 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of 10 from 33 reviews places it close to those audience scores, with neither critics nor viewers rating it highly.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The hotel that Mahogany (Vinnie Jones) enters at the beginning of the film is called “Barklay,” an anagram of the first syllables of the author’s name – Clive Barker.
  • Originally, Patrick Tatopoulos was intended to be the film's director.
  • Some of the paintings seen in Susan Hoff's gallery belong to Clive Barker.
