Short description
Buffy Summers is a popular cheerleader at a Los Angeles high school whose main concerns are shopping, parties and her social life. That changes when a stranger named Merrick approaches her and tells her she has been chosen to hunt vampires. Though she resists at first, Buffy comes to accept her role, trains for the task, and finds an ally in Pike, a classmate whose friend was attacked and turned. Her new calling brings her into conflict with Lothos, a powerful vampire who has killed others like her before.
Fran Rubel Kuzui directed the film, her second feature after Tokyo Pop, from a screenplay by Joss Whedon. Kristy Swanson plays Buffy, with Donald Sutherland as Merrick, Rutger Hauer as Lothos, Luke Perry as Pike and Paul Reubens as Amilyn. The film was released in July 1992 and runs 85 minutes.
Made for about 7 million dollars, it took in roughly 17 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 5.7 rating from around 54,000 votes, and on TMDB a 5.6 from roughly 947 votes. A critics' rating of 4.5 from 56 reviews places it below even the mixed audience scores. It belongs to the action, comedy and horror genres, and the credited cast numbers 52.

- Joss Whedon was so upset by the fact that his script was almost completely changed that one day during filming he left the set and never returned to work on the project.
- Fran Rubel Kuzui, the director of the film, is also one of the producers of the television series of the same name, which filmed 7 seasons.
