Marc had built a comfortable life in the shadow of his husband, a celebrated writer, and that life collapses when the man dies without warning. Left adrift, Marc invites his two closest friends, Sophie and Thomas, to travel with him to Paris, hoping the change of scene will ease his grief. The trip instead forces all three of them to confront difficult truths about themselves and their relationships. Dan Levy directs and wrote the screenplay, and also plays Marc; Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel appear as Sophie and Thomas, with Luke Evans as Oliver, Celia Imrie as Imelda and Arnaud Valois as Theo. The film is a British and American co-production running 101 minutes and mixing comedy, drama and romance.
Good Grief is Levy's first feature as director, following his work as a creator and performer on television, and he also produced it alongside Debra Hayward and Kate Fenske. It was released at the end of December 2023. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 13,000 votes, while on TMDB its score is 6.2 from a much smaller base of roughly 160 votes. The gap in vote numbers reflects how much larger IMDb's audience is; the two scores sit close together, indicating a broadly middling reception from viewers rather than a sharply divided one.
