In late 1970s Rome, a chance meeting at a movie theatre brings together Enea, an aspiring filmmaker, and Pietro, a shy medical student. The two young men, both around twenty-five, are drawn to each other and begin a romance. An unexpected event forces them apart, and for the next three decades they live separate lives while still hoping to find one another again. Enea builds a relationship with Antonio, while Pietro gives in to family and social expectations and marries Giulia. Years later, circumstances bring the two men back into each other's orbit.
