Queer

Queer is a drama set in Mexico City in the 1950s, where William Lee, an American expatriate approaching fifty, lives largely in isolation. His days pass among a small circle of fellow Americans and the city's bars, until Eugene Allerton, a younger man newly arrived in town, draws his attention. What begins as fascination grows into a complicated relationship between the two, one that leaves William hoping for a closeness he has long gone without.

Luca Guadagnino directed the film, the tenth of thirteen features in his directing career, following Challengers and preceding After the Hunt. Justin Kuritzkes wrote the screenplay, and Guadagnino produced alongside Marco Morabito and Lorenzo Mieli. Daniel Craig plays William Lee, with Drew Starkey as Eugene Allerton. Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Henry Zaga and Drew Droege appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of twenty-nine and a crew of 220.

The production, mounted by Frenesy Film, American Zoetrope, The Apartment Pictures and Fremantle, was a large undertaking, with a budget reported at 53 million dollars. Its worldwide box office return of about 7 million dollars fell well short of that figure. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from 569 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 246 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
