Once Upon a Time in China II continues the story of Wong Fei Hung, the martial arts master and traditional physician. In 1895, he travels to Canton for a medical conference that brings together Chinese and Western practitioners, accompanied by his student Leung Foon and the woman known as 13th Aunt. There they run into the White Lotus Society, a fanatical cult that wants to drive all foreigners out of China and attacks anyone, Chinese included, who has adopted Western customs. Wong becomes caught between the cult's campaign of violence and the threat that foreign powers will respond with their own military force.
Tsui Hark directed the film, the tenth of the thirty-one features he has directed in chronological order, following Twin Dragons and preceding The Master. Jet Li returns as Wong Fei Hung, with Rosamund Kwan, Max Mok Siu-Chung, Donnie Yen, David Chiang Da-Wei and Xinxin Xiong among the twenty credited cast members. The screenplay is by Tan Cheung, and Tsui Hark produced alongside Ng See-Yuen.
Released in April 1992, the Hong Kong production is an action comedy that took in around 30 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from a much smaller base of about 300 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 15 reviews places it essentially level with the audience scores. The film is a sequel in the Once Upon a Time in China series, with Jet Li again playing the central figure.
